EDUCATION: NEUROFEEDBACK AND QEEG COURSES

Biofeedback Institute of AAPB CR provides two courses:

1. BASIC COURSE (for beginners):
EEG BIOFEEDBACK FOR PROFESSIONALS
(50 hours)

Education and Training in EEG Biofeedback - Theory and Practice.
Open for: psychologists, physicians, and related professionals (educational counselors, speech therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, teachers, coaches, biofeedback technicians etc.)

CURRICULUM:
A. THEORY:

1. Neurophysiology and Electroencephalography for Neurofeedback
1.1. The structures of the brain and their functions
1.2. Biochemical and bioelectric processes of central nervous system and their mental correlates
1.3. Basics of electroencephalography and computer analysis of the EEG
1.4. Basic knowledge about cognitive / emotional functions in the relation to the brain
1.5. Special knowledge about indications for neurofeedback (ADHD, LD, epilepsy.)

2. Psychophysiology of Biofeedback and Neurofeedback
2.1. Dynamics of change of mental energy into neural (Eccles, Pribram)
2.2. Mechanism of neurofeedback effect (Sterman)
2.3. Diagnostic of mental/nervous functions and dysfunctions for neurofeedback purposes:
developmental diagnostics, medical and family history, neurodiagnostics (EEG/EP), psychodiagnostics
2.4. Analysis of psychological and neurological findings for feedback training:
Functional interpretation of EEG (correlates of EEG abnormalities and mental/behavioral dysfunctions)
Identification the specific dysfunctions (according to the neuro- and psychodiagnostics)

3. Phases and strategies for training
3.1 Setup of training plan
3.2. Training protocols according to disregulation of CNS
3.3. Training goals and watched parameters
3.4. Optimization of learning curve
3.5. Analysis of QEEG changes
3.6. Correlation of training protocols and clinical findings

4. Formal conditions of the practice (license, registration, education)

5. Ethics of choosing clients and treating clients

B. PRACTICE:
1. Process of neurofeedback training session
1.1. Principles of leading the client
1.2. Work with on-line QEEG parameters (continuous interpretations of frequency/amplitude changes)

1.4. Work with on-line signal: continuous interpretations of the process

2. Training in operating the EEG biofeedback system
2.1. Correct handling
2.2. How to operate the biofeedback system during the training

3. Continuous evaluating of the training
3.1. Criteria of progress and decline of the training
3.2. Development of symptomatology
3.4. Diagnostics

4. Ending the training
4.1. Recognizing plateau phase of learning
4.2. Evaluating, making report

5. Clinical Internship
5.1. 20 sessions of hands-on training, work with clients under supervision
5.2. 5 (minimum) self-experiential sessions of EEG Biofeedback

2. ADVANCED COURSE:
(Q)EEG AND NEUROFEEDBACK TRAINING COURSE
(60 hours)

I. RECORDING SESSIONS
1. Patient preparation
2. Skin preparation
3. Measuring for correct placement
4. Electrode placement (10-20 International System)
5. Impedance and voltage offset measuring
6. Safety issues
7. Basic electrical requirements necessary to good recording of data (impedance, frequency response, common mode rejection, sensitivity, amplifier noise, offset potentials, detection of artifacts)
8. Elementary trouble shooting

II. INTERPRETATION
1. Recognition of the different EEG patterns (signatures) both on line and off line
2. Typical EEG patterns for age related differences (developmental view)
3. EEG patterns for different syndromes in native (still eyes open/closed) EEG
4. EEG patterns under stress-activation tasks (hyperventilation, apnea, photic stimulation)
5. EEG patterns under cognitive activation tasks (reading, arithmetic, IQ test)
6. Interpretations of patterns and their relevance to the particular syndromes (Epilepsy, ADD/ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Anxiety Disorders etc.)
7. Atypical EEG patterns which indicate a need for further EEG studies and/or neurological evaluation
8. Reading a Fast Fourier Transform and Power spectral analysis

III. CLINICAL EVALUATION
1. Behavioral, Motoric, Sensory, Auditory, Visual, Receptive etc. symptoms
2. Distinguishing clinical conditions for diagnostic purposes (ADD/ADHD, LD.)

IV. QUANTITATIVE EEG (QEEG) ANALYSIS
1. Using the Fast Fourier and Fast Gabor Transforms for the clinical evaluation
2. Frequency analysis
3. Spectral analysis
4. Coherence analysis
5. Phase and asymmetry
6. LORETA neurofeedback
7. Normative databases

V. Evoked Potentials: ERP, VEP.
